How to Clean Electric Car Brake Pads

Although electric vehicles are similar to fuel vehicles in many aspects, the maintenance of their braking systems is still different. Particularly because EVs use regenerative EV brakes, brake pads typically wear out more slowly than combustion vehicles, meaning they don’t need to be replaced as often. However, regular cleaning of your brake pads is still critical to ensure optimal performance and safety. Here are some steps and tips specifically for cleaning electric vehicle brake pads.

Benefits of Cleaning Brake Pads

  1. Improve braking effect, make car braking more accurate, and improve driving safety.
  2. Increase braking force and reduce braking distance; (Braking distance is very important for the driver) Long-term resistance to high and low-temperature adsorption grease, Increase flexibility of brake cylinders and calipers, and solve the sudden brake deviation caused by brake brake jam.
  3. Reduce noise and vibration: Clean brake pads reduce noise and vibration generated during braking.
  4. Extend the life of the brake system: Normal maintenance of brake pads and brake shoes can reduce abnormal wear and tear on each other.

Materials required for cleaning electric vehicle brake pads

  • Jacks and stable brackets
  • Tire wrench
  • Highly effective chlorine-free brake cleaner
  • Wire brush or high-quality sandpaper
  • Protective gloves and goggles
  • clean absorbent cloth

Cleaning process

Step 1: Prepare your vehicle
Operate on a flat and stable surface, and ensure that the electric vehicle is turned off and parked. Use a tire wrench to loosen the tire screws, then use a jack to lift the vehicle and place it safely on a stand.

Step 2: Remove the Tire
Once the vehicle is stable, completely remove the tire screws and gently lift off the tire to expose the brake system.

Step 3: Perform a deep inspection and cleaning
Check the brake pad thickness and wear it carefully. If the brake pads are not obviously worn, spray the brake pads and brake shoe with brake cleaner, wait a few minutes for the chemical to act, and then gently remove any accumulated dirt with a wire brush or sandpaper.

Step 4: Thorough Wipe and Reassemble
Wipe the brake pads and brake shoe thoroughly with a clean absorbent cloth, making sure to remove all detergent residue. After a thorough inspection, reinstall the brake system and tires and make sure the screws are tight.

Step 5: Test Braking Performance
Carry out a low-speed driving test in a safe area to ensure the brakes respond quickly and make no unusual sounds.

Checking the brake system is one of the important ways to keep your car in good condition and have the best driving environment at all times. By following the steps above, you will not only improve your braking efficiency but also ensure your safety while driving. If you don’t know how to perform these steps, it is recommended to contact a professional car repair service to help you.
